Leesburg Family Dental offers invisible braces in Leesburg, VA

Do you find yourself trying to hide your smile because of crooked teeth? Maybe you have finally decided it’s time to do something to improve your smile, but you are hesitant because you don’t want to deal with traditional metal braces. Dr. Talib Salim Ali and the staff at Leesburg Family Dental can help with Invisalign®!

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a set of nearly invisible mouthpieces that are easily removable. The number of mouthpieces can vary by patient. The total number can range between 12 and 48, depending on how many teeth the patient needs moved. Each mouthpiece is a little different than the last, made to move teeth gradually and gently until they are straight.

What is the process to get Invisalign®?

If you are interested in getting Invisalign® orthodontics, Dr. Ali will first want to give you a thorough dental exam. This is also a chance for Dr. Ali to explain the procedure and to answer any questions you may have.

If you and Dr. Ali decide that Invisalign® is right for you, he will take 3-D images of your teeth and mouth and plan your treatment course. He will send all of your information and images to Invisalign® where they will make your set of aligners. You’ll return to the office to get your first set, and Dr. Ali will make sure that they are a good fit.

How long does it take for Invisalign® to work?

Typically, patients wear Invisalign® mouthpieces for 10 to 18 months. You’ll wear each aligner for two weeks and then move on to the next one. You should wear your Invisalign® mouthpiece for about 22 hours a day for best results.

What are the benefits of Invisalign®?

Many patients want Invisalign® because they are made of a clear plastic. They are much less conspicuous than traditional metal braces, and it will be hard for anyone to even tell you are wearing them!

Another advantage is that they are removable. With traditional braces it can be hard to keep teeth clean. Food becomes trapped in the braces, and it is hard to get out. With Invisalign®, the mouthpiece is removable so that you can take it out when you need to brush and floss. You can take out the mouthpiece while eating, or when there is a special occasion.

And of course, there are many benefits to doing something to correct crooked teeth. It can be hard to keep teeth clean when they are too close together and crooked. Crooked teeth can affect a person’s bite, eventually causing pain in the jaw.

Does Invisalign® work?

As long as you follow Dr. Ali’s instructions and wear your mouthpiece as much as you can, you will soon start to notice your teeth moving into the correct position.

Do I have to watch what I eat with Invisalign®?

If you know someone who has traditional braces, you’ve probably heard that they aren’t supposed to eat hard or sticky foods. However, yet another benefit of Invisalign® is that you don’t have to stop eating your favorite foods because you can remove the aligners before you eat. Just make sure you brush your teeth and then put the aligner back on after you are done eating. However, it’s not a good idea to eat sticky or too hard foods anyway.

How long will it take before I adjust to wearing my aligner?

Like any other orthodontic appliance, your aligners will take time to get used to them. However, most patients say that this period of adjustment really doesn’t take too long.

Will Invisalign® hurt?

You may feel a bit of discomfort and pressure when you get your new set of aligners every two weeks, but this should only be minor. This is a sign that the aligners are working and your teeth are moving into position.

What else should I know about Invisalign®?

  • Most orthodontists advise against chewing gum with traditional braces, but you can go ahead and enjoy gum with Invisalign®. Take out the aligner first.
  • You should avoid smoking while wearing your aligner because this can make it look discolored
  • Keeping your aligners clean is easy. Brush them with a toothbrush and toothpaste
  • You may need to wear a retainer each night after your Invisalign® treatment is completed. Dr. Ali will be able to give you more information about retainers.
