Biteguard

Today a biteguard was custom-fitted for your mouth to help prevent wear on your teeth and jaw (TMJ). For this appliance to work properly, follow these guidelines:

1. Usage- Wear the biteguard at night while you are sleeping. It may take a few days to get used to sleeping with it but after your adjustment period, it will feel normal. If the biteguard still feels tight or uncomfortable after a few weeks, call the office and we can make adjustments.

2. Sleep Position- Avoid sleeping on your jaw as this could make your jaw sore. Back sleeping is the best sleeping position to enable your jaw to relax. A small pillow or rolled up towel to support your neck curvature is optional and may be helpful.

3. Care- During the day store your biteguard in the plastic case that was given to you. This will prevent loss and will keep your family pet from chewing it. When you remove the biteguard in the morning, brush it with your toothbrush when you are brushing your teeth. This will keep it looking clean and fresh. Once every other week soak the biteguard in a commercial denture cleaner.

4. Precautions- During the day, avoid clenching or grinding your teeth as this puts undue stress on your teeth and jaw. Avoiding these habits will reduce long term wear on your teeth and reduce your chance of developing TMJ problems.
