  1. The length of time you experience numbness varies, depending on your metabolism, the type and amount of anesthetic you received and the area of the mouth you were anesthetized. The numbness should subside within two t three hours. While it is numb, you'll want to be careful not to bite your cheek, lip or tongue. Stay away from any foods that require chewing until the numbness is gone. Drinking fluids is great but avoid anything hot. Be especially careful with young children, as the strange feeling of the anesthetic is new to them.
  2. Precautions with biting and chewing (except as noted above) are not needed as the restoration hardens almost immediately.
  3. The gum tissue as well as the anesthetic injection site could have been irritated during the procedure. If needed, any over the counter pain medication (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen) will help.
  4. Sensitivity to cold can occur over the first few days. If the cavity was deep, the tooth may be more sensitive and this sensitivity may last for longer than 2-3 days. Prolonged sensitivity could be a sign of other complications. Let us know if the sensitivity persists.
  5. The finished restoration may be contoured slightly different and have a different texture than the original tooth. After a few days, you will become accustomed to the new feel.
  6. If any unusual symptoms arise or if you have any questions, please feel free to call Dr. Andow anytime at 303.799.1525 (office) or 720.482.9530 (home).
