Do you have a special event coming up? Or maybe you were shocked this morning when you looked in the mirror and noticed how yellow and dingy your teeth are? Or, maybe you are just tired of trying to hide your teeth when you smile and talk?

If you are concerned that your teeth don’t look as good as they should, Dr. Morrissey, can help! He is an expert in beautiful smiles!

What are some teeth whitening products and techniques my dentist might use?

There are many different techniques Dr. Morrissey may recommend when you come in to his Boones Ferry Dental practice in Lake Oswego, OR.

It is possible that a simple cleaning, performed by Dr. Morrissey’s hygienist, can get stains off of teeth. The hygienist will not only clean your teeth, but will try abrasion or polishing to try to get stains off. If this doesn’t work or doesn’t provide the results you’re looking for, Dr. Morrissey will give your teeth a thorough exam and then suggest the best technique to try to get teeth white again.

One of these techniques is in-office whitening. In this procedure, Dr. Morrissey puts a powerful whitening gel on your teeth, and then activates the cleaning agent in the gel with a special light or laser. This procedure offers dramatic results, although it can take one to three appointments before you see final results.

Dr. Morrissey may recommend whitening trays to use at home instead. He will custom-make these trays so that they fit precisely and comfortably over your teeth. You use the trays every day for two to three weeks, along with a special whitening gel that goes into the trays.

You may have stains on your teeth that are so deep these whitening methods won’t work. If this is the case, Dr. Morrissey may recommend veneers, which are thin shells made of porcelain or resin composite materials. They are custom-made to cover your tooth. Veneers are very durable, and they look like natural teeth.

He may also recommend bonding, which is a thin coating of resin or plastic that is placed over teeth to cover up stains.

Why shouldn’t I just do teeth whitening at home?

While it’s true there are many products you can get at the grocery store to try to whiten your teeth, you should know that some people shouldn’t use these products — they are not always the best option for everyone. And, whitening products available at the store do not have the approval of the American Dental Association. However, many of the whitening techniques used at Boones Ferry have been given the ADA seal of approval.
